Severini-Franchina Paris atelier

Parigi, avanguardia, Severini. Poche parole che già evocano i tabarin della ‘belle epoque’, i giovani artisti bohemien che hanno sfidato e sconfitto l’accademia, Gino Severini, il pittore futurista italiano che fu protagonista di quel glorioso momento! E’ sul suo studio di Parigi che ho avuto il piacere e l’emozione di lavorare. Un luogo pieno di storia e tracce d’arte stratificate nel tempo, lasciate da lui ma anche dagli artisti di famiglia che dopo di lui hanno abitato quel luogo: lo scultore Nino Franchina genero di Severini e il regista Sandro Franchina suo figlio. Un mare di oggetti, libri, ricordi, documenti che formavano un’immagine articolata ed indistinta, decifrabile solo dagli eletti della famiglia.
L’incarico chiedeva il restauro degli ambienti esistenti con il loro adeguamento alle esigenze dei proprietari di ospitarvi persone esterne alla famiglia, salvaguardando al contempo la memoria di quello che l’atelier aveva rappresentato per loro. Così ho avuto l’opportunità di sfogliare le pagine della storia unica di questa famiglia d’artisti che ha attraversato il Novecento da protagonista. Uomini che assieme alle loro donne hanno lasciato la loro impronta riconoscibile negli occhi e nell’animo di tutti noi.
Per prima cosa abbiamo filmato l’atelier come era, poi abbiamo fotografato e catalogato tutto quello che c’era suddividendolo per artista e tipologia di documento od oggetto. Parte del materiale è stato trasferito nelle altre sedi dell’Archivio Severini Franchina, parte doveva rimanere in loco ma in posizione salvaguardata dal possibile uso improprio fatto dagli ospiti.
Così abbiamo ideato un sistema espositivo che liberasse lo spazio dell’appartamento rendendolo disponibile all’uso degli ospiti ed un sistema di narrazione della storia che quei luoghi avevano vissuto e che rimaneva negli oggetti esposti.
Con questo lavoro è iniziata una collaborazione con l’Archivio Severini Franchina per ridefinire l’architettura gestionale del patrimonio famigliare.
Paris, avant-garde, Severini. Few words to recall the ‘belle époque’ tabarin ballroom, the age when the young bohemians artists challenged and won against the academic art, Gino Severini, the Futurist Italian painter protagonist among others grate masters of those glorious moments.
It’s on his Paris atelier I had the pleasure and the thrill to work on. A full of history venue and art traces stratified along the years, he but also by the others family artists left living there: the sculptor Nino Franchina, Severini’s son-in-law, and his son the director Sandro Franchina. An ocean of objects, books, memories, documents to design a composite and vague image only the family members can work out.
The task was to restore the atelier spaces fulfilling the need of the owners to have guests in the house, saving in the meantime the memory of what the atelier was for them. Then I had the opportunity to leaf through the pages of the unique story of an art family which played a leading role in the art of the nineteenth century, leaving their recognizable foot print in our eyes and soul.
First we filmed the atelier as it was, then we shoot pictures and classified everything was there, organizing the content by artist and type of document or object. Part of the material has been brought to other Archive Severini Franchina locations; part of it had to be replaced there after the works, defending it by the improper use of the guests.
Then we invented a new exhibition structure gaining free spaces to live, and a files and videos narration system, to explain the story of the venue told by the objects displayed.
From this project I started a collaboration with the Archivio Severini Franchina to redefine the managing architecture of the family assets.
